If you ever find yourself in the Meatpacking district, close to the Thompson hotel and hungry for some Asian-inspired cuisine, do not miss the Spice Market. There are scores of great places in the area, but this restaurant has a mix of authentic atmosphere, reasonable prices and choices to satisfy almost anyone.
SHORT & SWEET
The interior is definitely making the visit worthwhile on its own. If you enjoy vintage looks of aged wood and dimmed, warm environments - Spice Market will deliver on your expectations. We should mention the ladies on staff wear interesting outfits with their back bare, with just straps.
We came on a Sunday evening, so a reservation would have been preferred. While we did not have one, we got a seat in 10 minutes or so. The staff members were very busy, but courteous. That's was understandable - the place was packed after all.
All food was for sharing. We quite enjoyed the social experience of that, especially since we had a friend joining us. Our choices were Spiced Chicken Samosas, Pearl Noodles with Smoked Tofu and an Avocado and Radish Salad, along with a few pints of a local beer. We also were given crispy chips with a tomato basil sauce on the house to munch on. While the noodles were definitely doused with sometimes overwhelming taste (smoke, intense spice), the rest of our meal was surprisingly mild. But then again, we intentionally went for their more conventional choices. Quite certainly, the dishes we tried did not try have copious amounts of spices packed in them.
Overall, the food was well priced, a bit on a heavier side on average and leaning towards seafood choices. Definitely a worthwhile place to visit if you are around. Both for lunch and dinner.
P.S. there is also a large patio open when its warm - it is not facing a busy street so eating there could be very enjoyable.
